Top 20 Favorite Guitarist

Guitarist lists are often bound to piss off most metal/rock fans because each person rates them in different ways (technique, influence, etc.) This list however is not that list. these are my personal favorite guitarist from different eras, sub-generas and styles.

 20. John Petrucci

One of prog metal's favorites, the axe man of Dream Theater is usually on every "Best Guitarist" list.
Favorite songs: Pull Me Under, Metropolis pt.1

19. Zakk Wylde

"Wylde" man Zakk replaced Jake E. Lee in Ozzy's solo band in 1989 for the "No Rest For The Wicked" album and was his permanent guitarist Until 2010. he also has his own band, Black Label Society.
Favorite songs: Mr. Tinkertrain, No More Tears, Gets Me Through

18. Prince

Although he's not heavy metal, Prince is one of the greatest when it comes to guitar.
Favorite songs: Purple Rain, Kiss, When Doves Cry

17. Orianthi

She was the chosen guitarist for Michael Jackson's This Is It Tour which helped launch her solo career. she currently plays for Alice Cooper.
Favorite songs: Fire, Highly Strung

16. Chris Broderick

Megadeth's Current lead axe. He once played for Jag Panzer and Nevernore.
Favorite Songs: Headcrusher, King Maker

15. Lita Ford

Along with former bandmate Joan Jett, Lita is often cited for being one of the first successful female guitarist.
Favorite Songs: Blueberry, Close My Eyes Forever, Falling In and Out of Love

14. Slash

Famous for the top hat, chain smoking and lack of view of his face...kidding. Slash was the lead guitarist of Guns N' Roses and played on four Michael Jackson albums. He also has a solo band.
Favorite songs: Paradise City, November Rain, Anastasia, Rocket Queen, Give Into Me

13. Jake E. Lee

Probably Ozzy's most underrated guitarist, Jake E. Lee also played in Badlands and now Red Dragon Cartel.
Favorite songs: High Wire, Shot In The Dark, Bark At The Moon, Never Know Why, Decieved

12. Joe Perry

One half of Aerosmith's Toxic Twins aka Steven Tyler's right axe man.
Favorite songs: Back In The Saddle, Sweet Emotion, Legendary Child, Last Child

11. Mick Mars

Probably the most underrated guitarist of all time is the machine that is part of Motley Crue. He has plans for an upcoming solo album.
Favorite songs: Dr. Feelgood, Shout At The Devil, Wild Side, Home Sweet Home

 10. Marty Friedman

Ex. Megadeth guitarist and now a guitar legend.
Favorite songs: Holy Wars, Inferno, Sweating Bullets

9. Michael Amott

Arch Enemy, Ex- Carcass and Spiritual Beggars. a well known name in the metal world.
Favorite songs: My Apocalypse, Bloodstained Cross, War Eternal, Turn The Tide

8. Eddie Van Halen

The heart of Van Halen and rock and roll god, EVH and Slash are my reasons for picking up a guitar.
Favorite songs: Runnin' With The Devil, Panama, Eruption

7. Jimmy Page

One of the original guitar gods, (or son of Satan as some would say) the Crowley obsessed guitarist of Led Zeppelin.
Favorite songs: Kashmir, Whole Lotta Love, You Shook Me

6. Tony Iommi

The father of the riff. Heavy metal would not even exist today if it wasn't for this man and Black Sabbath.
Favorite songs: the first 3 sabbath albums, Heaven and Hell, God Is Dead?

5. Kirk Hammet

Kirk "The Ripper" Von Hammett (as he is sometimes called) became Metallica's axe man after Dave Mustaine was given the boot. (or the bus ticket) Although he sometimes goes over board with the wah, he is still one of the best.
Favorite songs: Creeping Death, Entire MOP album, For Whom The Bell Tolls, The Unforgiven, One

4. Frank Zappa

He's funny, weird and one hell of a musician.
Favorite songs: Stevie's Spanking, Muffin Man, My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mamma

3. Jimi Hendrix

Before EVH, Slash and all others on this list, there was Jimi. he is almost always listed as the greatest guitarist of all time, and is another one of my inspirations.
Favorite songs: Voodoo Chile, Who Knows, Machine Gun, Little Wing

2. & 1. Steve Vai, Randy Rhoads, Gus G and Chuck Schuldiner

If you couldn't tell, this was the hardest part of making this list. I couldn't just pick one of these guys. Each one of them are unique in their ability, and down right phenomenal. I have over half of each one's discography and I haven't found one bad song yet. Slash and EVH got me started, but these were the ones that made me go "woah, how in the world do they do that?"
Favorite songs:
Vai- Tender Surrender, For The Love Of God, I Would Love To, Deep Down Into The Pain
Randy- Over The Mountain, Mr. Crowley, Suicide Solution, DOAMM
Gus - The Fire And The Fury, Diggin' Me Down, Let It Die, Macabre Apparition, Edge Of A Dream (way too many more to name)
Chuck: Empty Words, Crystal Mountain, Cosmic Sea, Pull The Plug, Zombie Ritual (pretty much all Death albums)
