Band Of The Week: Ghost

Rating: 5/5

Swedish occult rockers Ghost (also known as Ghost B.C for legal reasons) are not newcomers, but have attracted new fame recently since the release of their sophomore album Infestissumam and the single “Year Zero” that debuted earlier this year.

Papa Emeritus II and the Nameless Ghouls have gathered a mass cult following around the world and are surprisingly popular but not exactly well received in the U.S. No shock there, due to the nature of the band and our extremely conservative, Christian-based country and their endless crusade against satanic” music. For those who don’t know Ghost is a “shock rock/metal band” With the satanic themed aspects of King Diamond/Mercyful Fate and Venom. What separates them from the rest is not their unique sound which has been compared to Pink Floyd and Psychedelic 60’s Rock, but the way the band is established like a mockery to the Catholic Church. One of the Ghouls described the band by saying “we're playing with the idea of divinity, and we're using the diabolical symbolisms to set a mindset”. Papa Emeritus, the bands leader and mascot is a satanic priest or “black pope” with a haunting but attractive appearance.  Masked in make up andwearing a black chasuble with emerald green lining, a white mitre, and sometimes carrying a scepter with the “grucifix” (the bands logo) at the top, He sings in a soothing but mildly chilling hypnotic voice bewitching the listener. The musicians of the band or “Nameless Ghouls” are masked and dressed in cloaks with symbols of the 5 elements on their attire. All keep their identity well-disguised; Including Papa Emeritus who has only appeared out of costume once in an interview.

Last month they released an EP titled “If you have ghost” .It made the hard rock billboard charts at number 7 and consists mostly of covers (plus a live track) and was produced by Dave Grohl. (Foo fighters, Nirvana).  Notable tracks are “I’m a Marionette” (ABBA cover) and “Waiting for the Night”. If you are a fan of the occult or love a band that puts on a hell of a show then I highly recommend you check them out.
